We’re delighted to announce that the World Committee of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement has awarded the Bronze Wolf to South African Scouting legend Winston Adams in recognition of his outstanding services of the most exceptional character.
The Bronze Wolf is the only award presented by the the World Committee of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement. It is given solely in recognition of outstanding service by an individual of the most exceptional character to the World Scout Movement. Mr Adams is the 6th South African Scouting member to receive this prestigious award since its inception in June 1934. He will be presented his award at the upcoming 41st World Scout Conference from the 14th to the 18th of August 2017 in Azerbaijan. The first Bronze Wolf was awarded to Lord Baden-Powell himself.
When asked for comment Mr Adams smiled broadly and said “I’m honored and very chuffed. It has been a pleasure to serve Scouting.” Mr Adams has also been appointed one of five Vice Chair positions for the World Scout Conference.
Under present guidelines, approximately one award for each 2 000 000 members worldwide can be made each year. To date 361 awards have been made. Click here to find out more about the history of the Bronze Wolf Award. To view the list of recipients click here.
As its name implies, the decoration is a wolf in bronze and it is worn round the neck on a green ribbon with a yellow edging. Bronze was purposely chosen in preference to “nobler” metals as gold or silver to underline the spirit of simplicity of the Movement. It was thought that the highest award in the Movement should consist in something having almost no intrinsic value. The award was to be – and has remained since – the only one existing at world level.
Other 2017 recipients include:
- Mr Kent Clayburn – United States of America
- Dr Mohamad Effendy Rajab – Singapore
- Mr Siegfried Weiser – WSF/Germany
- Fr Jonathan How – United Kingdom
- Dr Melissa Martins Casagrande – Brazil
