Today we celebrate the UN Global Day of Parents with our Scouting family. This might seem like an obscure UN Day for most of you, but for Scouting, having dedicated parents is the lifeblood of our organisation!
There are many of us who benefited from being in the Movement and are in Scouting today largely because of the encouragement of caring parents, myself included. So, I want to share a heartfelt thank you to all our Scout moms and dads, care givers and guardians.
Thank you for bringing your children to Scouting, and being part of our activities with your children. There are many other work, extracurricular, sport, art and family activities that compete for your time, and yet you take the time to encourage and bring your child to participate in Scouting.
Running a Scout Group is no small task, but having a team of parent helpers makes a world of difference. Thank you for your extra pair of hands at Scout meetings, camps and community service projects.
Thank you for spending endless hours driving to courses, hikes, camps and events.
Thank you for continuously encouraging your children and youth to push forward and grow and learn whilst having fun and earning badges, and then of course … thank you for also sewing the badges on the uniform! (p.s. it’s a great life skill to teach them to do it themselves!)
Thank you for giving all of us here at SCOUTS South Africa the privilege to be part of your children’s lives!
The Global Day of Parents is observed on the 1st of June every year. The day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2012 with resolution A/RES/66/292 and honours parents throughout the world. The Global Day provides an opportunity to appreciate all parents in all parts of the world for their selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship.
Yours in Scouting,
Brendon Hausberger
