UPDATE 23 September:
“The Mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis, announced at a public meeting with the Durbanville community last night that the proposed land sale of the 1st Durbanville Scouts property is being withdrawn by the City. We appreciate the City taking our and the community concerns onboard and thank everyone for their support on this issue.”
1st Durbanville need the support of members following the City of Cape Town advertising for comment the proposed sale of their leased land by public competition. This land has been leased from CoCT since the 1960’s and is home to one of our top Scout Groups. It provides a base for scouting in the Durbanville/Northern suburbs area, allows for camping and activities by Groups without similar facilities and is used by local community organisations as are many scout halls in the Metro.
The attached invitation to the public to object, comment or give input to the sale was published on 26 August but as the Group and Region were not directly advised, only spotted later. It also contains an error in the email address for comment.
Please consider the proposed sale of this leased land which will impact directly on 1st Durbanville after so many years of providing Scouting to the community of Durbanville and others. If you oppose the sale please submit an objection directly as a citizen or ratepayer as invited by CoCT. Note Submissions close 27th September so please act now.
Emails should go to keanon.vanderwalt@capetown.gov.za with copy to eleanor.brown@scouts.org.za so we can be sure they are recorded.
For info
- Scouts SA 1st Durbanville had earlier submitted a request to purchase the land from CoCT
- We have been in discussion with the City in regard to this proposal for 18 months and voiced our concern and objection
- As with all leased sites the Group has been responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the land.
- The site has been leased to 1st Durbanville since 1964
- 1st Durbanville has over 100 members currently and has consistently been in our top performing groups over many years.
Scouts SA WC Region and 1st Durbanville have objected to the proposed sale and as ratepayers and citizens share this situation and invitation to comment with all members and families.
Please support 1st Durbanville in their efforts to save their site by submitting comments in your personal capacity.
