The Scouting in Schools Programme is a partnership between SCOUTS South Africa’s Western Cape Region, the Western Cape Government, and the Western Cape Government Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s YearBeyond and After School Project offices. The programme enables SCOUTS South Africa to recruit and train unemployed youth and place them into a first employment and personal development program whilst at the same time running Scout programmes for Grade 4-6 learners under resourced in low- and no-fee public schools, with no financial cost to the school or learners. The Scouting in Schools Programme thus creates an employment opportunity with the benefit of equipping learners with life skills, fostering a love for nature, and promoting positive and active citizenship.
In addition to the leadership and skills development that takes place among the learners, Scouting in Schools also includes internships for unemployed young adults, 18-25 years old, from the serviced school’s community. These “YeBoneers” are trained as facilitators to run the Scout activities in their allocated school, and acquire skills that aid them to further their studies or gain employment after their year in Scouting.
Themes covered by the Scouting in Schools programme address skills needs and are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the National Development Plan.
The YeBoneers support their schools during the school day, and facilitate after-school Scout activities for learners at their school. Using the Scout programme provides fun, hands-on activities that focus on environmental awareness and outdoor living, and teaches valuable life skills like teamwork, leadership, and resilience that will last a lifetime.
To become a YeBoneer, eligible young adults must apply via the YearBeyond website, and then be selected through the recruitment process.
