Western Cape Awards Ceremony 2026

50 years of service! Joy Merryweather-Smith, Pack Scouter of 6th Rondebosch and 9th/16th Cape Town, and Timothy Botha, Scout Group Leader of 1st Edgemead, were recognised with the 50 year bar to the Medal of Merit.

Adult leaders and youth members from the Western Cape were presented with long service awards, commendations and merit awards at the annual awards ceremonies on 16 May in Sedgefield and on 20 May in Cape Town. Awards for the Outeniqua District were presented at a ceremony in Sedgefield attended by the Regional Commissioner Nimmy Abrahams. The Cape Town event was held a few days later at Fairbairn College. The regional leadership team and District Commissioners reported on the past year, and awards were presented by the Regional Commissioner Nimmy Abrahams and Chief Scout’s Commissioner Gary Pienaar.

Service badges were presented to 26 adult leaders who have completed 5 years of service and 9 who have completed 10 years. The Long Service medal for 15 years of service was presented to 9 leaders. Seven adults received the 20-year bar to their Long Service medal. Warren Pietersen (1st Rocklands), Marlene Adonis (2nd Elsies River) and Joan Bailey (Impeesa District) received the 30-year bar to the Long Service Medal, and Joy Merryweather-Smith (6th Rondebosch and 9th/16th Cape Town) and Timothy Botha (1st Edgemead) received the 50-year bar.

Six Regional Commissioner’s Commendations were presented to adults, one to a Cub from 2nd Hout Bay, and seven to a group of Scouts from 1st Hermanus and 1st Somerset West.

Eight Certificates of Merit were presented, and Medals of Merit were presented to Ian Kellerman (1st Naruna Constantia), Annsley Spies (1st Rocklands) and Conrad Thomas (Senior Scout Adventure organiser).
