While Scouting is often associated with adventure, hiking, and camping, one of its most important pillars is service. Through service projects, young people learn empathy, responsibility, and the value of making a positive difference in their communities.

Last month, a series of severe storms and cold fronts battered the Southern Cape and wider Western Cape. Torrential rain caused widespread flooding, damaged roads and infrastructure, and displaced vulnerable families. Across the Outeniqua District, fallen trees brought down power lines, leaving many communities without electricity for days. The resulting power outages also affected water supplies, as pumping stations were unable to operate.

Sedgefield was among the communities impacted. Families faced significant challenges, with some left without shelter, food, or access to clean water. As local organisations and residents mobilised to support those in need, Scouts from 1st Sedgefield Scout Group looked for a practical way to help.

Their solution was simple but effective: Jars of HopeA Jar of Hope is a layered dry ingredient mix containing rice, lentils, soup powder, stock, and other ingredients that can be cooked into a hearty and nutritious meal for a family of four. Easy to store, transport, and prepare, the jars provide immediate food relief to families facing hardship.

The Scouts launched a donation drive and began assembling as many jars as possible. Thanks to the generosity of supporters and the dedication of the Scouts, an impressive 75 Jars of Hope were completed. Two days later, the Scouts delivered the jars to the Masithandane Community Support Centre, a local organisation serving vulnerable members of the community.

Reflecting on the project, Rocket, Assistant Troop Scouter at 1st Sedgefield Scout Group, said: “These 75 jars helped provide approximately 300 meals to people in the community, a powerful reminder that small acts of kindness can have a big impact… Thank you to everyone who donated and helped make this possible. Together, we filled 75 jars with more than ingredients – we filled them with hope.”

The project was about far more than food. From collecting donations and assembling jars to delivering them to those who needed them most, the Scouts experienced firsthand how service can strengthen communities and change lives.

The success of the initiative stands as a testament to the values of Scouting and the commitment of young people to making a positive impact wherever they can.
